CIPE Celebrates 15 Years
Anniversary Focuses on Past, Present, and Future

CIPE is 15 years old, and to celebrate its anniversary, the Center has just launched a year-long program that draws on lessons of the past to build for the future.

Coming of age during the Latin American debt crisis in the mid-1980s, CIPE has worked for the past decade-and-a-half to ensure that emerging nations adopt institutions and reforms that are fundamental to open, democratic societies and prosperous market economies. CIPE's working partnerships with grassroots constituencies in 70 countries have carried out more than 450 programs supporting their indigenous efforts at building democracies through private enterprise and market-oriented economic reforms.

To gain a better understanding of how conditions have changed over the past 15 years and how CIPE's approach to these conditions has evolved, CIPE is undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of its programs, partners, and priorities.

This review will focus on the following:

By looking to the past, CIPE will be better positioned than ever to build on its successes and to avoid pitfalls as the organization prepares itself for the 21st century. Through the identification of regional challenges and the changing economic landscape, CIPE will work to help prepare international policy makers for the next generation of reforms.

In addition to undertaking the 15-year evaluation, CIPE will inaugurate these unique activities and programs during its anniversary year:

Economic Reform Today Special Issue - This one-time annual report will highlight CIPE programs that have taken place over the past 15 years.

Economic Reform Today Supplement - Each edition of Economic Reform Today, CIPE's quarterly magazine, will feature a special fifteenth anniversary section.

Training Programs - CIPE's training programs for chamber and association managers will be surveyed, and a special report will feature past trainees and how they have applied their CIPE experience.

Regional Conferences - CIPE will hold a series of regional conferences to explore current trends worldwide. The first of these conferences are scheduled for Russia (September 14-16), Romania (October 28-29), and Latin America (December 2-3).

Anniversary Speaker Series - To highlight current issues in emerging markets, CIPE will sponsor a series of presentations by leaders of CIPE's partner institutes around the world.

Advancing Women in Business - CIPE is sponsoring a workshop this summer in London at the 1998 Global Summit of Women focusing on the key role that women's business organizations can play in promoting international trade and regional economic integration.

Organizing For Success - CIPE's bi-monthly newsletter, Organizing for Success: A Newsletter for Women Entrepreneurs, will expand its focus and readership in the months ahead.

In celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, CIPE welcomes an opportunity to build even stronger relationships with its worldwide partners and donor institutions, many of which are not familiar with the full extent of CIPE's global reach. Given the breadth and depth of CIPE's programs and the track record that CIPE has established over the past 15 years, this promises to be a very exciting year.
