Additional Operational Grants

  • Center for the Study of Democracy (Bulgaria), "CG Reform and the Mass Media" - CSD organized a training seminar for over 40 representatives of the national and regional print and electronic mass media as journalists should serve as major promoters of corporate governance reform when reporting on business and the economy. The program included 6 sessions devoted to the issues: Introduction to corporate governance; Corporate governance and the relationship between shareholders and managers; Corporate governance and capital markets; Corporate governance and corporate boards; Corporate governance and disclosure of information; the Current state of corporate governance reform in Bulgaria. A Glossary of Corporate Governance Terms was also published and distributed (also available online at: http://www.csd.bg/CGdictionary_anons.html)

  • Center for Liberal Democratic Studies (Serbia), "CG Awareness in Serbia" - CLDS will establish a more coherent view of corporate governance in Serbia, and enable businesses and other stakeholders to address the current situation and future trends, particularly in regard to privatization. The project will include the following core activities: 1) assessment of the corporate governance system in Serbia and its effects on corporate performance; 2) defining the sources of poor corporate governance in Serbia (including reviews of the legal framework, privatization model and trends), 3) formulation of a strategy for corporate governance improvement; and 4) public advocacy of the need for improved corporate governance through an active media and public outreach campaign.

  • Center for Economic Development (Slovakia), "Building CG Stakeholder Capacity" CED will help build capacity of the local business community to be able to understand and operationalize the principles of corporate governance. This will be accomplished through intensive education of managers, board directors and other stakeholders. Also, introducing up-to-date international corporate governance know-how, with a special focus on business ethics will be a key CED undertaking. The seminars to be organized by the CED focus on: business ethics, combating corruption, fostering transparency and accountability in the business community, and cultivating a competitive and rule of law-based business environment in Slovakia.

  • Russian Institute of Directors - CIPE will work with the Russian Institute of Directors (RID) to develop a pilot curriculum and training program for representatives of Russian, Ukrainian, Central Asian and Caucasian institutions-as the program permits-that promote corporate governance. These representatives will be trained to become trainers for programs that teach corporate governance practices to board members, government representatives of joint stock companies, judges and enforcement officers of corporate governance. CIPE and the RID will conduct a conference in Moscow in which institutions from Russia and other Eurasian countries will participate, to further strengthen the regional corporate governance network. This project's focus on building a network of corporate governance promoters throughout the countries of Eurasia is especially crucial at the present time, as it has recently been reported that the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) may seek harmonization of security markets practices and regulations among the CIS member countries. If this occurs, this project will be all the more valuable, with its objective to develop a loose network of organizations in several CIS countries that can trade best practices and other corporate governance experiences, and provide a mechanism for sustainability of reform in this area.
